According to the results of the Türkiye National Energy Plan, electricity consumption is expected to be 455.3 TWh in 2030, 510.5 TWh in 2035. The shares of resources in electricity generation in 2025 were as follows: Coal: 33.6%, Natural gas: 23%, Hydropower: 15.8%, Wind: 10.9%, Solar: 10.5% from Geothermal: 3.2%, Other Sources: 3.1%.
of electric energy per year. Per capita this is an average of 3,342 kWh. Turkey could be self-sufficient with domestically produced energy. The total production of all electric energy producing facilities is 310 bn kWh, which is 109 percent of the country's own usage. Despite this, Turkey trades energy with foreign countries.
All data sets can be accessed on Ember's Data page. In recent years, wind and solar were the driving force of electricity generation from domestic sources in Türkiye. In 2024, wind and solar surpassed the peak annual electricity generation of domestic coal for the first time, permanently overtaking domestic coal.
To increase low-carbon electricity generation, Turkey should aim to expand its existing wind and solar energy infrastructure, given their proven contributions. For guidance, Turkey can learn from regions like Denmark and Iowa, where wind energy comprises about 60% of electricity generation, showcasing successful integration and utilization.
