Sweden 2024 – Analysis

Sweden has a national energy policy target of 100 % fossil-free electricity generation by 2040. In 2 022.170 TWh of electricity was produced and the share of fossil-free was just over 98 %, see Figure 4. Electricity generation consists of: 41 % hydropower, 29 % nuclear, 19 % wind, 7 % biopower and just over 1 % solar power.
However, the usage of energy storage, for example by using a battery, is not explicitly dealt with in the Swedish Electricity Act. As such, there are no explicit provisions for how energy storage is to be handled from a grid perspective.
Sweden submitted a draft updated national energy and climate plan (NECP) in July 2023. The European Commission assessed it, making recommendations for the final updated NECP, which Sweden submitted in June 2024 as one of four EU countries to meet the deadline.
Sweden is not expected to have a national storage capacity by 2030. Investment aid for both fossil CCS and bio-CCS is provided in the context of Industry Life (see section 3.5.3 for more details). The Industriklivet has so far supported some 80 projects. The Government has decided to introduce an aid for bio-CCS through reverse auctions. Before
